True Beauty

Education Not Required
"There never was a child that required schooling or education in order to learn deceitfulness, sensuality, passion, self-will, gluttony, pride, and foolishness. These things are not picked up from bad companions, or gradually learned by a long course of tedious instruction. They spring up of themselves, even when boys and girls are brought up alone. The seeds of them are evidently the natural product of the heart. The aptitude of all children to these things is an unanswerable proof of the corruption and fall of man. Now when this heart of ours is changed by the Holy Ghost, when this natural love of sin is cast out, then takes place that change which the Word of God calls “repentance.” The man in whom the change is wrought is said to “repent.” He may be called, in one word, a “penitent” man." ~ J.C. Ryle

Whose Servant Are You?
“Youth is the time when our passions are strongest—and like unruly children, cry most loudly for indulgence. Youth is the time when we have generally our most health and strength: death seems far away, and to enjoy ourselves in this life seems to be everything. ‘I serve lusts and pleasures’, that is the true answer many a young man should give if asked, ‘Whose servant are you?’” ~ J.C. Christian Womanhood
"The deepest root of Christian Womanhood is hope in GOD. She doesn't put hope in her husband or in getting one, and she doesn't put her hope in her looks." ~ John Piper
What Matters?
“I’ll tell you one of the most wonderful things about being a Christian is that I don’t ever get up in the morning and wonder I’m not doing anything today or if what I do matters. I live everyday to the fullest because I can live it through Christ and I know no matter what I do today, and it may just be in my prayer time, I’m going to do something to advance the Kingdom of God. Now does that make you fulfilled? You bet it does! And it gives you joy about living.” ~ Chuck Colson

"We are not trying to do School at Home.
We are trying to do HOMESCHOOL.

We're not trying to replicate the time, style or content of the classroom.

The "formal" portion of each teaching day is just the tip of the iceberg."

Live as If...
"Early on I came to believe that you should learn as if you were going to live forever, and live as if you were going to die tomorrow. What does this mean? In the simplest way, I would explain it like this. Always be learning, acquiring knowledge, and seeking wisdom with a sense that you are immortal and that you will need much knowledge and wisdom for that long journey ahead. Know that when you are through learning, you are through. But I want to live that life as if I were going to die tomorrow: with relish, immediacy, and the right priorities. I also will not waste even a minute." ~ John Wooden ("Wooden: A Lifetime of Observations and Reflections On and Off the Court")

Actions of Love ~ Feelings of Love
"Our culture says that feelings of love are the basis for actions of love. And of course that can be true. But it is truer to say that actions of love can lead consistently to feelings of love. Love between two people must not, in the end, be identified simply with emotion or merely with dutiful action. Married love is a symbiotic, complex mixture of both. Having said this, it is important to observe that of the two – emotion and action – it is the latter that we have the most control over. It is the action of love that we can promise to maintain every day." ~ Tim Keller

Conviction Not Condemnation
"...the Spirit brings conviction, but never condemnation. Godly conviction produces Godly repentance whereas worldy guilt produces a crippling spiritual paralysis that prevents us from seeing God's grace for the sake of His wrath. What we forget is that that wrath has been dealt with, and the only concern that God has for our sin is in abolishing it from our lives, not rubbing our noses in it. The latter comes only from the enemy." ~ Erik Lauren Mayle

What Sin Does...
"Sin, in its stark-naked reality, essentially calls God a liar: 'Your way isn't the best way. You want to deny me something that is good. You're misleading me as to how I should live.' The reason we need to look at our rebellion in all its ugliness is so that our thinking can be changed. "though we don’t know the reasons why he allows it to continue, he can’t be indifferent or uncaring, because the Christian God (unlike the gods of all the other religions) takes our misery and suffering so seriously that he is willing to get involved with it himself. On the cross, Jesus suffered with us." ~ Tim Keller
Parents Teach Them to Obey
"Parents, determine to make your children obey you, though it may cost you a lot of trouble, and cost them many tears. Let there be no questioning, and reasoning, and disputing, and delaying. When you give them a command, let them clearly see that you expect them to do it." ~ J.C. Ryle (Raising Godly Children)
In the Process
"We are in the process of being unveiled. We were created to reflect God's glory, born to bear his image, and he ransomed us to reflect that glory again. Every heart was given a mythic glory, and that glory is being restored. Remember the mission of Christ: 'I have come to give you back your heart and set you free.' For as Saint Irenaeus said, 'The glory of God is man fully alive.' Certainly, you don't think the opposite is true. How do we bring God glory when we are sulking around in the cellar, weighed down by shame and guilt, holding our light under a bushel? Our destiny is to come fully alive. To live with ever-increasing glory. Your heart bears a glory, and your glory is needed....now! This is our desperate hour!" ~ John Eldredge (Waking the Dead)

Trinkets Are Temporary
Every item I add to my possessions is one more thing to think about, talk about, clean, repair, display, rearrange, and replace when it goes bad. Acquiring a possession may also push me into redefining my priorities, making me unavailable for ministry. “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions” (Luke 12:15). ~ Randy Alcorn

Profit-Oriented Tendency
“In the West we have a tendency to be profit-oriented, where everything is measured according to the results and we get caught up in being more and more active to generate results. In the East -- especially in India -- I find that people are more content to just be, to just sit around under a banyan tree for half a day chatting to each other. We Westerners would probably call that wasting time. But there is value to it. Being with someone, listening without a clock and without anticipation of results, teaches us about love. The success of love is in the loving -- it is not in the result of loving.” ~ Mother Teresa (A Simple Path)

Where is Your Mission Field?
"At the very heart of the gospel is sacrifice, and there is perhaps no occupation in the world so intrinsically sacrificial as motherhood. Motherhood is a wonderful opportunity to live the gospel.
Jim Elliot famously said, 'He is no fool who gives up that which he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose.'
Motherhood provides you with an opportunity to lay down the things that you cannot keep on behalf of the people that you cannot lose. They are eternal souls, they are your children, they are your mission field."

American Church Culture?
"Soon I realized I was on a collision course with an American church culture where success is defined by bigger crowds, bigger budgets, and bigger buildings. I was now confronted with a startling reality: Jesus actually spurned the things that my church culture said were most important.
I could not help but think that somewhere along the way we had missed what is radical about our faith and replaced it with what is comfortable. We were settling for a Christianity that revolves around catering to ourselves when the central message of Christianity is actually about abandoning ourselves."
~ David Platt (Radical: Taking Back Your Faith From the American Dream)

Be Interested in Others

Do Something...
"When a friend is in trouble, don't annoy him by asking if there is anything you can do. Think up something appropriate and do it." ~Howe
Covenant Keeping Love
"So it is with marriage. It is a momentary gift. It may last a lifetime, or it may be snatched away on the honeymoon. Either way, it is short. It may have many bright days, or it may be covered with clouds. If we make secondary things primary, we will be embittered at the sorrows we must face. But if we set our face to make of marriage mainly what God designed it to be, no sorrows and no calamities can stand in our way. Every one of them will be, not an obstacle to success, but a way to succeed. The beauty of the covenant-keeping love between Christ and his church shines brightest when nothing but Christ can sustain it." ~ John Piper

Marriage Is Not...
"Marriage is not mainly about prospering economically; it is mainly about displaying the covenant-keeping love between Christ and his church. Knowing Christ is more important than making a living. Treasuring Christ is more important than bearing children. Being united to Christ by faith is a greater source of material success than perfect sex and double-income prosperity." ~ John Piper

Cheap Christianity?
"A cheap Christianity, without a cross, will prove in the end a useless Christianity, without a crown." ~ J.C. Ryle
All Your Desires
"Hand it over to me, the whole outfit, all of your desires, all of your wants and wishes and dreams. Turn them ALL over to me, give yourself to me and I will make of you a new self—in my image." ~ C.S. Lewis

Who Are You?
“It is what you read when you don't have to that determines what you will be when you can't help it.” ~ Oscar Wilde
Prepare Them for Heaven
“A true Christian must not be a slave to what’s currently ‘in-fashion,’ if he wants to train his child for heaven. He must not be content to teach them and instruct them in certain ways, merely because it is customary, or to allow them to read books of a questionable sort, merely because everybody else reads them, or to let them form bad habits, merely because they are the habits of the day. He must train with an eye to his children’s souls. He must not be ashamed to hear his training called odd and strange. What if it is? The time is short—the customs of this world are passing away. He that has trained his children for heaven, rather than for the earth—for God, rather than for man—he is the parent that will be called wise in the end.” ~ J.C. Ryle

Submission...
"When a woman holds her voice for a season, it gives her the ability to gain control of herself, to choose her words carefully, to pray and seek guidance, to journal her facts, thoughts, ideas, opinions, and intuitions, and to present all to her husband in an orderly fashion. This is not being passive; this is demonstrating her strength. It may appear to an onlooker that she is passive, but in reality she is exercising intelligence, discernment, and Spirit-control by presenting her concern in private when both are calm and she is prepared." ~ Glenda Hotton

Always...An Audience of One
As Randy Alcorn has often said...we always perform for an audience of One...God sees and knows all...
"Do nothing that you would not like God to see. Say nothing you would not like God to hear. Go no place where you would not like God to find you. Never spend your time in such a way that you would not like God to say, 'What are you doing?'" ~ J.C. Ryle

Be Rich in...
"What we keep we will lose. What we give and share and do in Christ’s name will ultimately come back to us in heaven, in a far better and permanent form. “Command them…to be rich in good deeds and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life” (1 Tim. 6:18-19)." ~ Randy Alcorn

No Wasted Years
"There is no unproductive time in God’s economy. What seems like wasted years, aren’t. God is always doing something, teaching you something, preparing you for something. Call Sin ~ Sin
"Modern Christians, especially those in the Western world, have generally been found wanting in the area of holiness of body. Gluttony and laziness, for example, were regarded by earlier Christians as sin. Today we may look on these as weaknesses of the will but certainly not sin. We even joke about our overeating and other indulgences instead of crying out to God in confession and repentance." ~ Jerry Bridges

Value Systems
“The church has been brought into the same value system as the world: fame, success, materialism and celebrity. We watch the leading churches and the leading Christians for our cues. We want to emulate the best known preachers with the biggest sanctuaries and the grandest edifices. Preoccupation with these values has perverted the church’s message.” ~ Chuck Colson

In Light of Eternity...
Without a doubt, the single greatest contributor to our inability to see money and possessions in their true light is our persistent failure to see our present lives through the lens of eternity. “But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’”(Luke 12:20). ~ Randy Alcorn (from "Money, Possessions and Eternity")

Shortness of Time
"Men of wealth and position we have in most churches. These, by virtue of their station have a work to do which those of lower worldly position cannot so well reach. But, alas! how few rich men are willing to be answerable to the responsibilities of their position, and in faithfulness remind their neighbors, rolling in luxury and ease, of the necessity of living in preparation for eternity, in view of the shortness of time and the reckonings of the last day!" ~ Phoebe Palmer (Four Years in the Old World, 1867.p. 157-8)

Thy Kingdom Come...
"How many Christians are there who pray every Sunday in church, "Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done!" without ever realizing the spiritual implications of such intercession! What are we praying for? Should we edit that prayer so that it becomes a confrontation: "My kingdom go, Lord; let Thy kingdom come!" Certainly His kingdom can never be realized in my life until my own selfish kingdom is deposed. It is when I resign, when I am no longer king of my domain that Jesus Christ will become king of my life."

True Repentance...
